How to travel to the slag heap is shown in the drawing or the links to Google Maps. The best approach is using the A43, exit Recklinghausen-Hochlarmark and parking at the car park either Am Handweiser (where the direct ascent to the horizon observatory is located), Stadtteilpark Hochlarmark (where you can reach the dragon bridge and the route directly to the sundial), or Zeche Ewald in Herten. You can also reach the slag heap with the bus number 210 and 234 via Herten-Mitte or Recklinghausen-Süd via bus stop Neue Horizonte or you can take the bus number SB27 from Herten-Mitte or Wanne-Eickel to the bus stop Bergwerk Ewald 1/2. Information on the timetables can be found here: www.vestische.de. Accessibility The requirements of wheelchair users were taken into account during the planning of the horizon observatory and the sundial. The entire complex is accessible via paved paths, serpentines and ramps without using any steps. Please do consider that (depending on your chosen route) over a path length of one to two kilometres you have to manage an altitude difference of 100 m. An approach with a private car is not intended, but frequent bus links will be offered after the entire park is completed. Tours The Initiativekreis Horizontastronomie im Ruhrgebiet e.V. offers tours for groups as large as 25 people (or one school group) to the sundial and to the horizon observatory after prior consultation.
